The Daily Guide to the Yoga Sutras: An author event with Susan Fendler
The Daily Guide to the Yoga Sutras: An author event with Susan Fendler
Tuesday, January 7, 2025 7:00 - 8:30pm
This modern and practical guide is designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners, offering an in-depth exploration of the ancient teachings of the Yoga Sutras. The Daily Guide to the Yoga Sutras is unique in that it offers an interactive experience through external resources that link the reader to meditations and physical practices that bring each sutra to life. Each page is filled with insights that encourage introspection, self-discovery, and personal growth.
About the Author
Susan Fendler’s passion for yoga and music has been the driving force behind her life’s work. She grew up in New Hampshire, where she developed a love for the arts at an early age. After graduating from Eastman School of Music, Susan pursued a career in music education and performance in New York.
Despite a fulfilling career as a music educator, Susan felt a calling to explore the world of yoga. She began practicing yoga over 25 years ago and quickly fell in love with the physical and spiritual benefits of the practice. She trained in Rishikesh, India at Triguna Yoga Ashram and also in Anusara Yoga in Park City, Utah.
Susan’s love of yoga inspired her to delve deep into yogic philosophy and to study Patanjali’s Yoga Sūtras in depth. Her commentary on the Yoga Sūtras is her gift to her students and practitioners around the world in hopes to simplify and clarify this ancient wisdom. As a master yoga instructor, she has trained numerous students to become certified yoga instructors themselves, passing on her knowledge and passion to others.
When she’s not teaching yoga or writing, Susan loves to travel and explore new cultures. She trained in yoga in Rishekesh, India at Triguna Yoga Ashram. One of her favorite places is Bali, Indonesia where she leads yoga retreats. She also enjoys skiing and spends her winters on the slopes in Park City.

A Workshop for Exploring (and Writing) Poetry
Thursday January 9, 7-8:30pm
Join us for an evening of inspiration and guidance to help you discover the poetry that is hiding inside you.
Bring a notebook, journal, or any paper you wish to use (doesn’t matter what – fancy leather-bound with hand-pressed pages or scrap paper from your recycling bin) and a pen, pencil, marker, crayon, random art supplies – whatever will make the marks you want on your journey as a poet. (If you need something to write on or want a clean start, we have a great journal section to find your next vessel.) Also, feel free to come a few minutes early to grab an iced tea, cookie, or other treat from Oasis to bring into the session. There is no cost to joining – just an hour and a half out of your evening and the risk of inciting a passion for poetry!

January Book Club: Lighter by Yung Pueblo
January Book Club: Lighter: Let Go of the Past, Connect with the Present, and Expand the Future by Yung Pueblo
Thursday January 30, 2025 7pm - 8:30pm
This January, the Golden Braid Books Community Book Club is starting out the new year with a new staff favorite, Lighter: Let Go of the Past, Connect with the Present, and Expand the Future by Yung Pueblo.
We have lots of copies in stock, so stop by to get your copy today! Keep in touch with us throughout the month on our Instagram and Facebook pages, and then we’ll convene here at the Braid for our book club meeting to talk about the book, meet some new folks, and share some insights and mutual love of reading.
About the book:
A radically compassionate plan for turning inward and lifting the heaviness that prevents us from healing ourselves and the world, from the New York Times bestselling author of Clarity & Connection.
"During the years when I had abandoned myself, my mind felt undeniably heavy. I knew I needed to find a clear way to help me feel lighter."
Yung Pueblo's path to deep healing began only after years of drug abuse had taken a toll on his mind and body. Searching for a way forward, he found that by honestly examining and addressing the anxieties and fears that he had been running away from, he no longer felt like a stranger inside of his heart and mind. And once he dedicated himself to meditation and trusting his intuition, he started to finally feel mentally lighter, with more love emerging from within. This was not an easy journey, and it's one that he is still on, but it showed him that real healing is possible.
In Lighter, Yung Pueblo demonstrates how we can all move forward in our healing, from learning self-compassion to letting go to becoming emotionally mature. As the heaviness falls away, our minds will finally stop feeling overburdened with tension and we'll be able to reconnect with the present. And the world around us will hopefully become more inviting in crisp and newly vibrant ways. But these are just the first steps. As we grow stronger and expand our self-awareness, it's our responsibility--and also part of the healing journey--to take actions to support the health and harmony of all people. The final section of Lighter shows how we can and must contribute to building a world that is no longer structurally harmful but, instead, structurally compassionate.
Yung Pueblo's hope is that as more of us heal, our actions will become more intentional, our decisions will become more compassionate, our thinking will become clearer, and the future will become brighter.

December Book Club: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer
December Book Club: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Thursday December 19, 2024 7pm - 8:30pm
This December, the Golden Braid Books Community Book Club is wrapping up another satisfying year of reading with the book we have all been anxiously awaiting - The Serviceberry by the ever-amazing Robin Wall Kimmerer!
We will have lots in stock for its November 19th release date, so give us a call to reserve your copy today! Keep in touch with us throughout the month on our Instagram and Facebook pages, and then we’ll convene here at the Braid for our book club meeting to talk about the book, meet some new folks, and share some insights and mutual love of reading.
About the book:
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Braiding Sweetgrass, a bold and inspiring vision for how to orient our lives around gratitude, reciprocity, and community, based on the lessons of the natural world.
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry's relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth--its abundance of sweet, juicy berries--to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution insures its own survival. As Kimmerer explains, "Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency."

About the Book:
The award-winning poet reinvents a genre in a stunning work that is both a novel and a poem, both an unconventional re-creation of an ancient Greek myth and a wholly original coming-of-age story set in the present.
Geryon, a young boy who is also a winged red monster, reveals the volcanic terrain of his fragile, tormented soul in an autobiography he begins at the age of five. As he grows older, Geryon escapes his abusive brother and affectionate but ineffectual mother, finding solace behind the lens of his camera and in the arms of a young man named Herakles, a cavalier drifter who leaves him at the peak of infatuation. When Herakles reappears years later, Geryon confronts again the pain of his desire and embarks on a journey that will unleash his creative imagination to its fullest extent. By turns whimsical and haunting, erudite and accessible, richly layered and deceptively simple, Autobiography of Red is a profoundly moving portrait of an artist coming to terms with the fantastic accident of who he is.

About the Book:
The House of the Spirits, which introduced Isabel Allende as one of the world's most gifted storytellers, brings to life the triumphs and tragedies of three generations of the Trueba family. The patriarch Esteban is a volatile, proud man whose voracious pursuit of political power is tempered only by his love for his delicate wife Clara, a woman with a mystical connection to the spirit world. When their daughter Blanca embarks on a forbidden love affair in defiance of her implacable father, the result is an unexpected gift to Esteban: his adored granddaughter Alba, a beautiful and strong-willed child who will lead her family and her country into a revolutionary future.
One of the most important novels of the twentieth century, The House of the Spirits is an enthralling epic that spans decades and lives, weaving the personal and the political into a universal story of love, magic, and fate.

The Moonflowers: an author event with Abigail Rose-Marie
Tuesday, October 22, 2024 7:00 - 8:30pm
In a powerful and poignant novel, an artist unravels her mysterious family history and its generations of women who depended on each other to survive.
Tig Costello has arrived in Darren, Kentucky, commissioned to paint a portrait honoring her grandfather Benjamin. His contributions to the rural Appalachian town and his unimpeachable war service have made him a local hero. But to Tig, he's a relative stranger. To find out more about him, Tig wants to talk to the person who knew her grandfather best: Eloise Price, the woman who murdered him fifty years ago.
Still confined to a state institution, Eloise has a lifetime of stories to tell. She agrees to share them all--about herself, about Tig's enigmatic grandmother, and about the other brave and desperate women who passed through Benjamin's orbit. Most revealing of all is the truth about Whitmore Halls, the mansion on the hill that was home to triage, rescue, death, and one inevitable day that changed Eloise's life forever.
As Tig begins to piece together the puzzle of her mysterious family tree, it sends her spiraling toward a confrontation with her own painful past--and a reconciliation with all its heartrending secrets.

September Book Club: A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
Thursday September 26, 2024 7pm - 8:30pm
This September, the Golden Braid Books Community Book Club is reading A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
We have lots of copies in stock, so come on by and get yours today! Keep in touch with us throughout the month on our Instagram and Facebook pages, and then we’ll convene here at the Braid for our book club meeting to talk about the book, meet some new folks, and share some insights and mutual love of reading.
About the Book:
In A Psalm for the Wild-Built, bestselling Becky Chambers's delightful new Monk and Robot series, gives us hope for the future.
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered.
But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They're going to need to ask it a lot.
Becky Chambers's book asks: in a world where people have what they want, does having more matter?

August Book Club: Somehow
August Book Club: Somehow by Anne Lamott
Thursday August 29, 2024 7pm - 8:30pm
This August, the Golden Braid Books Community Book Club is reading Somehow: Thoughts on Love by Anne Lamott.
"Love is our only hope," Anne Lamott writes in this perceptive new book. "It is not always the easiest choice, but it is always the right one, the noble path, the way home to safety, no matter how bleak the future looks."
In Somehow: Thoughts on Love, Lamott explores the transformative power that love has in our lives: how it surprises us, forces us to confront uncomfortable truths, reminds us of our humanity, and guides us forward. "Love just won't be pinned down," she says. "It is in our very atmosphere" and lies at the heart of who we are. We are, Lamott says, creatures of love.
In each chapter of Somehow, Lamott refracts all the colors of the spectrum. She explores the unexpected love for a partner later in life. The bruised (and bruising) love for a child who disappoints, even frightens. The sustaining love among a group of sinners, for a community in transition, in the wider world. The lessons she underscores are that love enlightens as it educates, comforts as it energizes, sustains as it surprises.
Somehow is Anne Lamott's twentieth book, and in it she draws from her own life and experience to delineate the intimate and elemental ways that love buttresses us in the face of despair as it galvanizes us to believe that tomorrow will be better than today. Full of the compassion and humanity that have made Lamott beloved by millions of readers, Somehow is classic Anne Lamott: funny, warm, and wise.

July Book Club: Grandma Gatewood's Walk
July Book Club: Grandma Gatewood's Walk by Ben Montgomery
Thursday July 25, 2024 7pm - 8:30pm
This July, the Golden Braid Books Community Book Club is reading Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail by Ben Montgomery.
Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, sixty-seven-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. By September 1955 she stood atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, sang "America, the Beautiful," and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it."
Driven by a painful marriage, Grandma Gatewood not only hiked the trail alone, she was the first person--man or woman--to walk it twice and three times. At age seventy-one, she hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity, and appeared on TV with Groucho Marx and Art Linkletter. The public attention she brought to the trail was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction.
Author Ben Montgomery interviewed surviving family members and hikers Gatewood met along the trail, unearthed historic newspaper and magazine articles, and was given full access to Gatewood's own diaries, trail journals, and correspondence. Grandma Gatewood's Walk shines a fresh light on one of America's most celebrated hikers.
